The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola bagged an "Award of Excellence" in Osogbo recently as part of the activities marking the 2018 International Day for Monuments and Sites. The event organized by the National Museum and Monument, Osogbo, recognized Oyinlola's relentless efforts and support for the promotion of Yoruba culture in Nigeria.

Receiving the award on behalf of Oyinlola, Alhaji Kazeem Adio lauded the effort of the Staff and Management of the National Museum and Monument for the honour and award bequeathed on the awardee. Adio affirmed the continued support of the CBCIU Chairman to the promotion of culture and traditions of the Yoruba people.

The Executive Director of the CBCIU, Professor Siyan Oyeweso in his lecture titled, Heritage for Generation, used the occasion to enjoin government at various levels to take keen interest in retrieving and protecting some of the monuments facing serious human and other natural threats. He noted that across Nigeria, only two monument sites have received the support and recognition of UNESCO which include the Osun-Osogbo Groove in Osun State and Sukur in Adamawa State. .

"The continuous destruction of these heritage sites is no doubt the destruction of our rich past. It becomes not only a personal tragedy but a national one. That our children today lack adequate understanding of their culture and the values embedded in them or the heritage left behind by our forebears are not accessible today portends a serious danger for the future of the country". He said.

Oyeweso charged the relevant stakeholders in the area of culture to ensure that other heritage and monument sites are retrieved and promoted. He also reiterated the need for the promotion of communicating in Yoruba language among the younger generation in order the safeguard the Yoruba culture and monument.

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Osun state on Arts and Culture, Mrs Taiwo Oluga among others received awards on the occasion.
